While hydrogen is trumped as a clean burning fuel, the process required to separate the H molecule from water requires a lot of energy. As of right now, the only efficient way to get that energy is through the burning of fossil fuels- which takes us right back to the initial problem. Unless hydrogen can be isolated using a clean, renewable form of energy then its prospects for reducing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions are dim. Hopefully solar-powered water electrolysis will soon be able to provide the energy.
