That is an interesting point you raise about Canada’s inability to properly enforce environmental laws for the mining industry here in Canada. I don’t know how robust the laws are for current and future mining in Canada, but it seems that there needs to be some ways of retroactively holding mining corporations accountable for environmental and health damage caused by closed mines. I’m thinking in particular about problems with lead poisoning in the community of Buchans, Newfoundland, which has been on the news lately. These people are suffering health consequences due to environmental contamination by a zinc and lead mine that was closed in 1980. And this is just one of many, many similar stories for closed mines all over Canada.
