Really nice… so many questions need to be answered… and from that… where to start? BAPE, in Québec, is a good first step to share the information. It allows people to ask questions to authority in order to assess the social problem. However, who is authority? “Guesswho” suggested that it can be scientist. Some may suggest that is can be economist. Why authority cannot be both? Dr. Peter G. Brown, a philosopher at McGill, had a bad experience one day with some economists that have said to him that “if you cannot speak our language than forget it… you’re cooked”. This citation profoundly hurts me because it is a really good example how people disengage themselves from each other. Did I not learn that if you speak many languages is a reflect of your opened minded person? Did I not learn that working with different people with different background makes the project more worth? That’s been said… We do not necessarily have to speak the same languages to navigate the world effectively. Instead of been discouraged by one school of thought, let’s get connected because we have the correct information we need to make it possible!

I think it is super important that in a democratic regime people can have an opportunity to be both informed and involved in any project that may transform their community or their close environment. Unfortunately, public opinion is often dilute and has a weak impact on decisions making. In Quebec, even tough the BAPE commissions (Bureau des audiances publiques sur l’environnement – sorry there is no official translation) allow citizens to express their concerns about certain topics, too little effort is made on informing the population about its right and its interest in all those project that may have an impact on the environment or on the society in general. As it was discussed in our last class, perhaps we should count on scientific community to inform citizens about possible threats.
