It confounds both Anthropogenic and Environmental effect. A more efficient way to do this kind of research is by adopting the Active Adaptive Management technique (AAM). It is very costly but this method is, by definition, a systematic process of modelling experimentation, and monitoring to compare the outcomes of alternative management active. The design of the experiment consists basically of treatments with a control where different parameters are manipulated. This process gives better results and helps managers and scientists to take the best managing strategies as possible. However, as I mentioned, it could be very costly, politically and socially not feasible. However, if we are concerned about the cost, what is the real cost? Searching for better managing strategies or paying for what has been destroyed? Managing natural resource is an on-going process and both scientists and managers are aware of that. Even if it is costly, decision makers should fully support this kind of research (AAM) because, it might be too late if the ecosystem regime shift has passed the tipping point.
