Sieber to keynote at SKI Canada

Renee Sieber is pleased to give the keynote at this year's Spatial Knowledge and Information Canada.

Sieber works at the intersection of social theory and geospatial and other information and communications technologies. She is considered a leader in the field of participatory GIS, where she asks two questions: 1. What is the impact of technologies on public engagement in civic and environmental issues? And 2. Can non-experts meaningfully participate in complex technologies (and, of course, what constitutes ‘meaningful’)?

She’s organized numerous conferences. She created the International PPGIS conference in 2002 and co-created Spatial Knowledge and Information Canada in 2008. In September 2016, Sieber co-organized GIScience 2016, the premier conference on Geographic Information Science research.

Recently Sieber has been given CAG’s Lifetime Achievement Award in GIScience. She’s just been nominated by Mc Gill University for the Social Sciences and Humanities Council (SSHRC) Impact Award. This is in large part because Sieber is the PI of Geothink, a SSHRC partnership grant of 26 researchers and 25 partners, which investigates how the geospatial web, open data, crowdsourcing, and citizen science are shaping government and citizen interactions.

Sieber has given several keynote speeches. Most recently, she gave a keynote at the biennial GIScience 2014. And she’s excited to give the keynote at this year’s SKI Canada on "10 Things You Should Know About Engagement, Volunteerism, and Participation in Geospatial Technologies".
