MAPPING THE UNMAPABLE DATA-DRIVEN WORLD

Despite the long history of mapmaking and the diversity of scholarly and scientific practices, maps are experiencing something of a renaissance in terms of usage. Technology is enabling ubiquitous instant information production, access and visualization of large volumes and variety of data at a global scale as never seen before. Yet we do not know how people will interact with this emerging data-driven world and what will be its impact on the foundations of mapping theories in order to sustain the growing power of maps as organizational tools, modes of analysis, and persuasive visual images. How will current mapping research and practices fit into this new data-driven world? Are we witnessing an enormous paradigm shift in mapmaking?
