Newfoundland Erioderma Project

This project, supervised by Yolanda Wiersma, Memorial University, hopes to engage the public in the conservation of the lowly, but no less important, Erioderma lichen.

Her team will be looking to contact people who live near known Erioderma locations (e.g., Bay d’Espoir, Avalon), to make them more aware about the importance of the lichen, and to engage them via the Geoweb in the conservation of the lichen.

A first step will be to identify the websites or social networking sites frequented by cottagers or sportsmen or natural history buffs--individuals who come in contact with the lichen. These are potential audiences for interfacing on the Erioderma project. Then the researchers will examine what tool(s) that they may use (e.g., map mashups and widgets) for each audience.
